A Brush with Hope: Jordan’s Journey from Foster Care to Creative Confidence

At Alternative Family Services (AFS), we believe every child deserves the chance to discover their passions, build confidence, and experience the joy of being a kid. Through our Foster Hope campaign, we are dedicated to raising funds to send foster youth to various camps this summer—whether it’s sports, arts, science, or nature. The impact of these experiences can be life-changing, as shown by the story of one of our remarkable foster youth, Jordan*.

Meet Jordan
Jordan came into foster care at the age of 10 after enduring years of instability and uncertainty. Moving from home to home, Jordan struggled with feelings of loneliness and self-doubt, often feeling out of place and unseen. Despite these challenges, Jordan had a spark—a love for art that truly needed the right environment to flourish.

The Summer That Changed Everything
Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, Jordan attended an art camp through the Foster Hope campaign last summer. This opportunity was more than just a summer activity; it was a pivotal moment in Jordan’s life.

From the moment Jordan stepped into the vibrant, creative environment of the camp, something magical happened. Jordan blossomed when surrounded by peers who shared the same passion and were mentored by supportive and inspiring instructors. Each day was filled with new techniques, exciting projects, and the encouragement to express oneself freely.

Finding Confidence and Community
For the first time, Jordan felt a sense of belonging and pride. The camp provided a safe space to explore creativity, build lasting friendships, and gain confidence. By the end of the summer, Jordan’s art had transformed from hesitant sketches to bold, expressive pieces. More importantly, Jordan’s self-esteem soared.

A Future Full of Promise
Returning from camp, Jordan carried the newfound confidence and skills back into everyday life. Jordan’s foster family noticed a profound change. Art became a gateway to healing, communication, and envisioning a future full of possibilities.

Jordan’s story is just one example of the incredible difference that summer camps can make for foster youth. These experiences are not just about having fun but about giving children like Jordan the tools and support to thrive.

Help Us Foster Hope

This summer, we aim to send even more foster youth to camps where they can explore their interests, build self-esteem, and create lasting memories. Your donation to the Foster Hope campaign can make this possible. Every dollar helps open the door to a brighter future for a child in foster care.
