What are your main responsibilities at AFS?

As a Regional Director, I am responsible for the programmatic leadership of the Sacramento, Solano and Sonoma sites. Since I am new to my role, I have been working closely with the Sacramento site and just beginning to learn about the Sonoma and Solano sites. Some of the things I have been responsible so far is supporting the program development on Family Seeing and the Mental Health programming in Sacramento along with supporting structure and developing processes to further enhance our Foster Care and Mental Health integration.

What led you to work in this field?

I have always had a passion for giving back and helping others. I think this field was a natural fit for me and lead to a natural transition to Marriage and Family Therapy along with early on working in a group home setting with homeless and runaway youth. Working in that setting fueled my desire to continue to serve those youth that have so much need for support.

Why did you choose to work at AFS?

The mission and values at AFS resonated with me. I really enjoy the people. AFS gives me opportunities to continue to learn and grow in this profession. I also believe that AFS has areas of need where I have strengths. I noticed that AFS is focusing on innovation, learning and growth, and I enjoy all of those.

What are the three best things about your job?

I enjoy getting to know all the team members at AFS, program development and the challenge that comes with putting the puzzle pieces together.

What are the three toughest things about your job?

Slow myself down to learning things from the beginning: the agency, my position and AFS protocols.

Tell us about one impactful moment you’ve had since working at AFS.

Seeing staff come together and supporting each other during a time of need.

What is an interesting fact about you that others wouldn’t expect?

I am extremely shy so getting to know people is challenging for me.

What’s one piece of advice you would provide to someone just starting out in a similar role?

Take the time to listen and learn. Ask a lot of questions. There are many people at AFS with so much knowledge, experience and passion that it is important to let them lead.

One of my favorite workplace quotes: The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it. -Ray Kroc
